AJ's new workbench

My one and a half year old grandson, AJ, loves to shadow his Daddy, The Engineer, doing jobs around the house. I thought AJ would enjoy a workbench of his own, and made one from this nightstand I bought for $3.00 at our local Habitat for Humanity Thrift Store. I also had to buy a can of paint, but everything else we had at home. The drawer pull is made from a folding wooden rule that belonged to my father who did not live long enough to meet AJ. It's sentimental, as I know they would have had a special bond. We delivered it this week while visiting for Thanksgiving, and AJ loves it!


Coincidentally, a label inside the drawer stated the furniture was made in a Florida prison. I bought it in Virginia; it is now back in Florida!

    Just amazing. Truly. I am already trying to think of an existing, comparable piece of furniture that I can repurpose to make one of these for my son's room!

    All the subtle details you incorporated really make this piece such a standout to me! This is by far a much nicer and more thoughtful gift for a young boy than any plastic toy workbench could aspire to be. Kudos to you :P

    So excited to see this! I've seen lots of play kitchens from nightstands but this is the first workbench. Our little ones would love it.

    My husband said we could start looking for a nightstand to make a kitchen, but I just might have to start looking for two.

    I just came across this on Pinterest. What a neat idea!! I found a nightstand almost identical for $10 on Craigslist tonight. My little boy will have a work bench for his tools very soon.
